Five Signs You Are About to Breach a Prop Firm Drawdown

Most drawdown breaches are not surprises. They follow a recognisable pattern, and traders who learn to spot the pattern early save themselves an entire evaluation fee.

Here are the five signals that consistently show up in the sessions right before a breach.

1. You are checking the drawdown number more often than your chart

When the floor distance becomes the thing you look at most, your attention has moved from the market to the account. That shift almost always precedes a badly timed entry made to “get it back”.

2. You have increased size after a losing session

Revenge sizing is the fastest route to breaching a daily limit. The loss has already consumed part of your daily budget; sizing up multiplies the remaining risk against a shrinking buffer.

3. Your last three trades all shared the same direction bias

Three consecutive trades on the same thesis is not conviction, it is exposure to a single idea. If that idea is wrong, the drawdown absorbs all three.

4. The trailing floor has moved up and your size has not moved down

This is the mechanical one. After a winning session, the trailing floor rises. If your position size stays the same, your effective risk as a percentage of remaining room has increased — often without you noticing.

5. You are within 20% of the daily limit before the session's main event

Economic releases and market opens are where slippage is worst. Entering a volatile window with less than a fifth of your budget left is a coin flip you do not need to take.

What to do when you spot two or more

Cut size in half or stop for the day. The evaluation is not a single session; it is a sequence, and preserving the account is always worth more than one more attempt at a target.

The consistent observation across more than 1,400 managed evaluations is that failures come from rule breaches rather than bad analysis. That means the fix is procedural, not analytical: write the three numbers down, check them mid-session, and treat a breach risk signal as a reason to reduce exposure rather than press.
